History of Heber Overgaard has become a popular subject among the American and European public. This book is based on the life of the great pioneer and religious leader, Heber J. Grant. The story of this great man and his great time in Utah, along with the hardships he and his family faced while in the United States, is the basis for this exciting and inspiring story. Heber was born in England, a British subject of Scottish descent, and immigrated to Utah with his two sons and wife. The family was originally from Missouri and had come to Utah in 1869. The family settled in the Great Salt Lake Valley and became known as a group that traveled on horseback and by land. This lifestyle brought them to be known as the “Big House” because they were able to raise cattle and livestock on their own. They were a very proud and prominent part of the Native American community during this time, which is why the author, Joseph Taylor, uses this name. Heber and his family had a rough time in the beginning of their lives in the United States due to bad weather in the area. Heber became the leader of this community and many of the pioneers, but it took years before the American government came to know of his unique way of living. Although they had become well known in their community, Heber was not yet considered worthy of being the first Chief Prophet. A short time later, Heber was given the chance to become the First Chief Prophet of the Chicken Wings of the Night Saints restaurant in Heber. At this point he was a very respected individual, and many felt that he was being set up for a fall as he had never been given any authority by the church. Heber soon gained much respect and power from the church members, as well as the community. His life in Salt Lake City also changed significantly when he married Brigham Young’s half sister Ruth. After Heber became known as a leader of the LDS Church, it was not long before he moved to the newly formed city of Salt Lake City and became the mayor. While serving as Mayor, Heber was responsible for many of the events and activities that led to the formation of the Utah territorial government. Heber eventually became a Governor of the territory and served as an Apostle to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the church. He is a member of the Council of the Twelve, and a counselor to the leaders of the church. Heber and his family live on a ranch in Colorado, where they raise cattle and horses. As a result of his great success in business, he became extremely wealthy and was well-known in the community. Heber lived a very active life and was involved with the political and social scene. History of Heber Overgaard is an engaging story of one of the most interesting periods in our nation’s history. It is a great book to read in order to learn more about the pioneer era and the early days in the United States. A very enjoyable read, this book should be on the bookshelf of every American history lover. This book has been widely praised by numerous places.
